Toy Fair 2017 had less Minimate surprises than last year, but what did appear got me excited for the possibilities for the rest of the year. The new reveals were the 80's TMNT cartoon, Netflix Iron Fist, DC Vinimates, and previously hidden characters from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Spider-Man Homecoming movie waves. The Kingdom Hearts license was also announced, but no photos were allowed. Click any image below to see a larger version. All photos are courtesy of Jordan DesJardins of ScienceFiction.com.
80's TMNT Cartoon Minimates
The first 5 waves of TMNT Minimates were based on the current Nickelodeon cartoon. This year, DST is going old school with Minimates from the 80's TMNT cartoon. The first two waves are pictured above. They will be released in 2-packs like the TRU releases instead of blind bags like the specialty store releases. And these will only be released at specialty stores like ours.
I watched this cartoon as a kid, so these are the versions of the turtles and their friends and enemies that I am the most familiar with. I think the designs work very well as Minimates. I know some people still want the turtles' heads to be sculpted more like their actual head shapes, like Bebop and Rocksteady's are, but I still like the traditional Minimate head on these. I am hoping for TMNT Vinimates so we can get a larger version of that Krang!
Kingdom Hearts Minimates
I love the Kingdom Hearts games, so I am really pumped for these Minimates! It's a shame that pictures of these were not allowed at the show. The characters that have been confirmed so far are Sora, Donald, Goofy, Jafar, Tron, and Sark. They will be sold as 2-packs. I am guessing that each series will have versions of Sora, Donald, and Goofy, along with new Disney characters. I think this will help the series to stay popular with both Kingdom Hearts fans and general fans of the other Disney properties. DST confirmed that their license also covers the Final Fantasy characters in the games. Since the prototypes were not allowed to be shown publicly yet, I am guessing they won't be solicited for a few months, and will be a Christmas release.
I like Vinimates, and I am glad to see DC Vinimates are coming, but what makes this announcement really exciting is that it could mean that DC Minimates are coming back. At the show, DST showed Vinimates from Batman vs Superman, Justice League, and Wonder Woman. The Minimate-style makes it very easy to picture how awesome these would be as Minimates. DST has not confirmed anything regarding DC Minimates returning, but it is easy to look at what happened with the Watchmen license, which was first announced as Vinimates, and is now being offered as a Watchmen Minimates 4-pack. I am cautiously optimistic. :)
Netflix Iron Fist
Iron Fist is coming to Netflix in March, and the trailer looks incredible. Although I haven't seen Luke Cage yet as of this writing, I really enjoyed Jessica Jones and both series of Daredevil. And the Minimates from these series have been spot-on representations of the characters. I look forward to having the full Defenders Minimates team!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
When the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Minimates were revealed, one 2-pack was still kept hidden - Ayesha and Ego. Diamond had these on display at Toy Fair, along with the rest of the figures from this series:
You might notice one other item above that was not shown earlier - Gamora's giant gun! This series is arriving even earlier than expected - we start shipping them out on March 2nd. You can get your set here: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Minimates
Spider-Man Homecoming Minimates
The last new product on display was Marvel Minimates Series 73: Spider-Man Homecoming. The top photo shows Vulture, Spidey, and Shocker. The bottom photo is Peter, Aunt May, and the Tinkerer. I am glad the Tinkerer is making his way into the movie universe, as he was a key background player in some great comic runs. Vulture looks incredible here, and I love his wing span! These are up for preorder here: Spider-Man Homecoming Minimates
It's going to be a great 2017 for Minimates!
